If you’re wondering about the best mold removers, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll tell you about the most effective mold remediation products and also tell you what products don’t work so well for mold, even though they might work well on other things you’d want to get rid of (like bacteria and viruses).
Of course, if you’ve got a lot of mold in your home, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends hiring a professional for the job, and we agree with that advice. For small amounts of mold, covering less than 10 square feet, you can probably handle the job yourself as long as you don’t have health problems that might be made worse by close exposure to mold. Just make sure to wear the appropriate safety gear, including gloves and an N-95 respirator mask, during the mold removal process.
Keep in mind the fact that no mold remover is effective on porous materials. Those must be removed and replaced because they cannot be adequately cleaned, no matter what product you use.
When looking at mold removal products, we looked for those with proven effectiveness against mold. We recommend using a product proven effective against a wide range of molds, since there are more than 300 kinds of mold sometimes found in homes in the United States. A product known to work against only a few types of mold might not take care of the kind of mold growing in your home, even if it is very effective against some other kinds of mold.
Bleach is the first product many people reach for when they need to clean up mold in the home. It’s cheap and many people have it on hand. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that a solution of one cup of household bleach in one gallon of water can be used to remove most types of mold from non-porous surfaces. That said, it’s not our top recommended mold remover because it doesn’t kill all types of mold and because there are other products we feel are safer. Bleach produces fumes that can be harmful, especially if you have asthma or other breathing problems, and it can irritate your skin. Bleach is also corrosive, so it damages many surfaces.
Never use bleach to remove mold on porous or semi-porous surfaces, like wood, because while it may kill the mold on top, mold can remain deep in the pores of the material and the water in the bleach actually feeds the mold, helping it grow back.
If using bleach to remove mold, be careful not to mix it with other cleaning products, such as those containing ammonia.
Some people want a more natural, less noxious mold remover than bleach and many use plain white vinegar or apple cider vinegar, diluted with a little water, to clean up mold. While a mixture of vinegar and water is often used as a natural, affordable household cleaner, we couldn’t find any evidence as to whether or not it is an effective mold killer. We don’t want to guess or take chances. We want to know we’re using a product that works.
Foster 40-80 is often recommended for removing mold. It kills many types of bacteria, viruses and molds. We like the product, but it’s currently only available in five-gallon containers, which makes it more suitable for professional or commercial use than for the average homeowner. If you have so much mold you need five gallons of mold killer, you need to call in a professional!
For those interested in natural mold removers, Seventh Generation offers some products that are likely to be effective against many common types of household mold, although the manufacturer’s website doesn’t make any claims about their effectiveness for this purpose. Seventh Generation Disinfecting Bathroom Cleaner is proven effective against influenza type A, for instance, and against the common cold virus, and contains ingredients likely to remove and kill at least some common strains of mold. We still prefer a mold removal product that is known to kill a wide range of household molds, however. We think this is a great product for regular bathroom cleaning, but it’s not what we’d suggest if you need to remove mold.
